Ensure AI Development Goes Well

The AI Safety and Governance Club is George Mason's student-run initiative focused on the safe development of AI and other technologies that it can enable. We run two fellowships — a technical fellowship focused on AI alignment, interpretability, and evaluations and a governance fellowship focused on understanding how policies and institutions can be used to ensure that AI development is safe and aligned with societal values.

Our Mission

Artificial intelligence and subsequent advances in biotechnology and robotics have shown a potential for a great change in human flourishing in our lifetime. However, these changes are not guaranteed to be ones we desire. The AI Safety and Governance Club aims to develop student's understanding of the risks of AI systems and how they can be mitigate through empirical developments and institutional changes. We work towards this goal by hosting fellowships, running competitions, speaker events, and by connecting students to career opportunities in the AI safety field.

Technical

For students studying computer science, data science, bioengineering, or similar majors that want their technical work to have a positive impact on society. We will help you explore technical subfields in AI alignment and the implications it will have on fields such as cybersecurity and bio-risk.

Governance

For students studying government, public policy, law, or economics that want to understand the technology their work impacts. We will help you understand how you can effectively shape institutions to reflect the capabilities and risks of developing technology.

What We Do

Weekly Readings

Fellows will read about fundamental concepts and new developments in AI safety & governance. They will discuss the readings with other members and share their perspectives.

Competitions

We will host multiple competitions including a policy competition. This will allow members to put what they learn into practice.

Speaker Events

We will host speakers from GMU and outside organizations that have an insight into specific domains of AI safety.

    Weekly meetings on technical AI safety — alignment, interpretability, biosecurity threat models — and AI governance — regulation, international coordination, lab policy.
